Naruhito, born on February twenty-third, nineteen sixty, is the current Emperor of Japan, having ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne on May first, two thousand nineteen. As the one hundred twenty-sixth monarch in the traditional order of succession, he carries a legacy that intertwines with the history of his family, particularly during the reign of his grandfather, Emperor Hirohito.
His journey to the throne began when his father, Emperor Akihito, became emperor in nineteen eighty-nine, leading to Naruhito being named the heir apparent. He was formally invested as Crown Prince in nineteen ninety-one. His education included attending Gakushūin schools in Tokyo, where he developed a strong foundation in history at Gakushuin University, followed by studies in English at Merton College, Oxford.
In June nineteen ninety-three, Naruhito married Masako Owada, a diplomat, and together they have one daughter, Aiko, Princess Toshi. As emperor, he has continued the tradition of his predecessors by not visiting Yasukuni Shrine, in line with their stance against the enshrinement of convicted war criminals. His reign marks the beginning of the Reiwa era, emphasizing peace and harmony.
Naruhito is also known for his interest in water policy and conservation, reflecting his commitment to environmental issues. He served as the honorary president of the two thousand twenty Summer Olympics and Paralympics, showcasing his support for international cooperation and youth engagement through the World Organization of the Scout Movement.
