Nicolás Maduro, born on November twenty-third, nineteen sixty-two, is a prominent Venezuelan politician and former union leader who has held the title of de jure president of Venezuela since two thousand thirteen. His political journey began as a bus driver, from which he ascended to become a trade union leader and later a member of the National Assembly in two thousand. Maduro's career took a significant turn when he was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in two thousand six, a position he held until two thousand twelve, before serving as vice president under the late President Hugo Chávez.
Following Chávez's death, Maduro won the special presidential election in two thousand thirteen, becoming the fifty-third president of Venezuela. His presidency has been marked by a series of challenges, including a decline in popularity due to severe shortages and economic hardships that sparked widespread protests in two thousand fourteen. Despite these challenges, Maduro maintained his grip on power through various state institutions, including the Supreme Tribunal and the military, which played a crucial role in his administration's response to dissent.
In two thousand eighteen, Maduro was reelected amidst allegations of electoral fraud, and in two thousand twenty-four, he secured a third term, despite evidence suggesting he lost the election by a significant margin. His government has faced accusations of authoritarianism, human rights abuses, and corruption, leading to a humanitarian crisis that has seen millions of Venezuelans flee the country. The United Nations and Human Rights Watch have reported numerous extrajudicial killings under his administration, which Maduro has consistently denied, attributing the crisis to external conspiracies aimed at regime change.
On January third, two thousand twenty-six, Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured by US forces and charged with drug trafficking, to which they pleaded not guilty. Although he was de facto removed from power, the Venezuelan government, led by interim president Delcy Rodríguez, continues to recognize him as the de jure president of Venezuela.
