Pepin I of Aquitaine

Pepin I of Aquitaine, born in the year seven hundred ninety-seven, was a prominent monarch who held the titles of King of Aquitaine and Duke of Maine. As the second son of Emperor Louis the Pious and Ermengarde of Hesbaye, Pepin was destined for a significant role within the Carolingian Empire.

In August of eight hundred seventeen, Pepin was assigned Aquitaine, a subkingdom that had previously been ruled by his father during the reign of Charlemagne. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of his reign, during which the only known coinage bearing his name was issued, likely at the behest of his father.

Pepin's court was graced by the presence of Ermoldus Nigellus, a poet who chronicled his exploits. Notably, in eight hundred twenty-four, Pepin embarked on a campaign into Brittany, showcasing his military leadership. However, his military endeavors were not without challenges.

In the years eight hundred twenty-seven to eight hundred twenty-eight, Pepin was dispatched by Louis to assist Bernard of Septimania against an incursion from the Umayyad ruler Abd al-Rahman into the Iberian March. Unfortunately, Pepin and his forces arrived too late to alter the course of events, leading to the deposition of his co-commanders, Hugh of Tours and Matfrid of Orléans.
