Peter II of Sicily

Peter II of Sicily, born on July twenty-fourth, thirteen oh five, ascended to the throne as King of Sicily in thirteen thirty-seven, although he had been co-ruler alongside his father, Frederick III of Sicily, since thirteen twenty-one. His reign was characterized by significant turmoil, particularly in the relationship between the monarchy and the powerful noble families, including the Ventimiglia, Palizzi, and Chiaramonte clans. This period was also marked by ongoing conflicts with Naples.

Contemporary accounts of Peter's capabilities were less than flattering. Notably, Giovanni Villani described him in his work, Nuova Cronica, as 'almost an imbecile,' while Nicola Speciale referred to him as 'pure and simple.' These characterizations suggest that Peter was perceived as lacking the acumen typically expected of a ruler.

During his reign, the Neapolitans successfully captured the Lipari Islands and seized the cities of Milazzo and Termini within Sicily. Peter's rule came to an end after a brief illness on August eighth, thirteen forty-two, in Calascibetta. He was laid to rest in the cathedral of Palermo, leaving behind a legacy that would be continued by his eldest son, Louis, who was only four years old at the time of his father's death.
