Peter II of Yugoslavia

Peter II of Yugoslavia, born on September sixth, nineteen twenty-three, was the last king of Yugoslavia, ascending to the throne at the tender age of eleven following the assassination of his father, King Alexander I, in nineteen thirty-four. His reign was marked by the establishment of a regency under his cousin, Prince Paul, who governed on his behalf during his formative years.

In late March nineteen forty-one, the political landscape shifted dramatically when Prince Paul aligned Yugoslavia with the Tripartite Pact. This decision sparked a pro-British coup that restored Peter to power, declaring him of age. However, just ten days later, Axis forces invaded Yugoslavia, leading to a swift occupation that forced Peter and his government into exile.

By June nineteen forty-one, Peter had established a government-in-exile in London. His personal life took a significant turn in March nineteen forty-four when he married Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark, with whom he had a son, Alexander, born a year later. Despite these developments, Peter's reign came to an abrupt end in November nineteen forty-five when the Yugoslav Constituent Assembly deposed him, transitioning the nation into a republic.

After his deposition, Peter settled in the United States, where he faced personal struggles, including depression and alcoholism. He passed away from cirrhosis in November nineteen seventy, at the age of forty-seven. Initially buried at the Saint Sava Monastery Church in Libertyville, Illinois, his remains were later transferred to the Royal Mausoleum of Oplenac in two thousand thirteen.
