Philip II of Spain

Philip II of Spain, born on May 21, 1527, was a prominent ruler whose reign marked a significant era in European history. Ascending to the throne of Spain in 1556, he also became King of Portugal in 1580, following a dynastic crisis that led to the formation of the Iberian Union. His rule extended over various territories, including Naples, Sicily, and the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands, showcasing the vastness of the Spanish Empire inherited from his father, Emperor Charles V.

Deeply devout and a staunch defender of Catholicism, Philip II viewed himself as a bulwark against the Ottoman Empire and the Protestant Reformation. His reign was characterized by military engagements, including notable victories against the Ottomans at Oran, Malta, and Lepanto. However, his ambitious plans to extend Spanish influence into Asia were ultimately abandoned, and his attempts to invade Protestant England in 1588 ended in disaster with the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
