He served as the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from two thousand eleven to two thousand twenty-one, a position that marked him as the most senior leader in the one-party state. His tenure as President of Cuba spanned from two thousand eight to two thousand eighteen, during which he succeeded his brother, Fidel Castro.

Castro's military career began with his involvement in the Cuban Revolution, leading to his appointment as the minister of the Armed Forces from nineteen fifty-nine until two thousand eight. This lengthy service made him the longest-serving minister of the armed forces in Cuba's history.
