Originating from Najaf, Iraq, Larijani hails from the influential Larijani family. His early education began in the religious seminaries of Qom, where he laid the foundation for his future roles in both the judiciary and politics. For eight years, he was a member of the Guardian Council of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a body that plays a crucial role in overseeing elections and legislation.

In two thousand nine, he was appointed as the head of Iran's judicial system by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, a position that further solidified his influence within the country. Larijani is known for his close association with Khamenei and is often regarded as a potential successor to the Supreme Leader, alongside Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who eventually succeeded his father.
