Shahu I

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Shahu I

Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Shivaji Sambhaji Raje Bhonsale, born on May eighteenth, sixteen eighty-two, was the fifth Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire, a legacy established by his grandfather, Shivaji I. He was born into the illustrious Bhonsle family, the son of Sambhaji I and Yesubai. His early life was marked by turmoil, as he was taken captive during the Siege of Raigad by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Shahu's release from captivity came only after Aurangzeb's death, a pivotal moment that set the stage for his rise. The political landscape was fraught with conflict, particularly between the Maratha factions led by Tarabai and Shahu. Demonstrating remarkable military prowess, Shahu emerged victorious in the fierce Battle of Khed, which ultimately led to his coronation as Chhatrapati.

Under Shahu's reign, the Maratha Empire flourished, extending its influence across much of central and western India. His leadership was instrumental in solidifying a powerful Maratha Kingdom, which thrived during his rule. Following his death on December fifteenth, seventeen forty-nine, the administration of the Empire was managed by his ministers and generals, including the Peshwa Bhats and the notable houses of Shinde and Holkar, who maintained a loose coalition under the Chhatrapati's directives.
