Tamar Gurju Khatun

Tamar Gurju Khatun, born in the year 1227, was a prominent figure in the medieval world, known for her dual role as a writer and a member of royalty. As a Georgian royal princess from the illustrious Bagrationi dynasty, she held a significant place in history, particularly as the principal consort of the Sultanate of Rum.

Her marriage to Sultan Kaykhusraw II came after the death of Muhammad II of Khwarazm in 1237, marking a pivotal moment in her life. This union not only solidified her status but also intertwined her legacy with the political landscape of the time. Following the sultan's death in 1246, Tamar's life took another turn as she married the powerful Anatolian figure Mu'in al-Din Parwana.

As a mother, she bore Sultan Kayqubad II, further extending her influence within the royal lineage. Beyond her familial ties, Tamar was also a patron to the renowned poet Rumi, showcasing her support for the arts and culture during a vibrant period in history.

The title Gurju Khatun, meaning 'Georgian Lady' in Turkic languages, reflects her heritage and the respect she commanded in both Georgian and Turkish societies. Her life story is a testament to the intricate connections between royalty, culture, and the arts in the medieval era.
