Yazdegerd I

Yazdegerd I, the Sasanian King of Kings, ruled over Iran from three hundred ninety-nine to four hundred twenty. Born as the son of Shapur III, he ascended the throne following the assassination of his brother, Bahram IV. His reign is often characterized as a period of renewal within Sasanian history, despite being occasionally referred to as 'the Sinner' in native accounts.

During his largely uneventful rule, Yazdegerd I fostered amicable relations with the Eastern Roman Empire, earning the trust of Emperor Arcadius, who appointed him as the guardian of his son, Theodosius. His diplomatic approach extended to the Jewish and Christian communities, with Yazdegerd being recognized for his support of the Church of the East in four hundred ten. This earned him comparisons to Cyrus the Great, the revered Achaemenid emperor known for liberating the Jews from Babylonian captivity.

However, Yazdegerd's attempts to diminish the power of the nobility and Zoroastrian clergy were met with resistance. His religious policies, which aimed to curb their influence, ultimately led to his downfall. The discontent among the nobility culminated in his assassination in the remote northeast, as they sought to prevent his sons from claiming the throne.

Following his death, Yazdegerd's eldest son, Shapur IV, was swiftly killed after taking the throne, leading to the rise of Khosrow. Meanwhile, another son, Bahram V, rallied an Arab army to Ctesiphon, compelling the nobility to recognize him as the new shah, thus continuing the tumultuous legacy of the Sasanian dynasty.
