Yonatan Netanyahu

Yonatan Netanyahu was an esteemed Israeli military officer, renowned for his leadership of Sayeret Matkal during the pivotal Entebbe raid in nineteen seventy-six. This operation was a direct response to the hijacking of an international passenger flight by Palestinian and German militants, who diverted the aircraft from Greece to Libya and ultimately to Uganda, where they received backing from the notorious dictator Idi Amin. The mission was a remarkable success, resulting in the rescue of one hundred two out of one hundred six hostages, but tragically, Netanyahu lost his life in action, becoming the only Israeli soldier to be killed during this crisis.

Born on March thirteenth, nineteen forty-six, in New York City, Yonatan was the eldest son of Benzion Netanyahu, a prominent Israeli professor, and the brother of Benjamin Netanyahu, who would later serve as Israel's prime minister. His early years were spent in the United States, where he completed his high school education. Following his service in the Israeli military during the Six-Day War, he briefly attended Harvard University before transferring to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in nineteen sixty-eight. However, he soon left academia to rejoin the military.

In the early nineteen seventies, Netanyahu joined the elite Sayeret Matkal unit, where he distinguished himself and was awarded the Medal of Distinguished Service for his exemplary conduct during the Yom Kippur War. His legacy was honored posthumously when Operation Entebbe was renamed 'Operation Yonatan' in recognition of his bravery and sacrifice.
