Yonatan Netanyahu

Yonatan Netanyahu was an esteemed Israeli military officer, renowned for his leadership of Sayeret Matkal during the pivotal Entebbe raid in 1976. This operation was a direct response to the hijacking of an international passenger flight by Palestinian and German militants, who diverted the aircraft to Uganda with the support of dictator Idi Amin. The successful counter-terrorist mission resulted in the rescue of one hundred two hostages, but tragically, Netanyahu was the only Israeli soldier to lose his life during this critical operation.

Born on March thirteenth, nineteen forty-six, in New York City, Yonatan was the eldest son of Benzion Netanyahu, a prominent Israeli professor, and the brother of Benjamin Netanyahu, who would later become the Prime Minister of Israel. His early years were spent in the United States, where he completed his high school education before returning to Israel to serve in the military during the Six-Day War.

After his military service, Yonatan briefly attended Harvard University before transferring to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in nineteen sixty-eight. However, his commitment to military service soon took precedence, and he rejoined the Israeli Defense Forces. In the early nineteen seventies, he became a member of Sayeret Matkal, where he distinguished himself and was awarded the Medal of Distinguished Service for his bravery during the Yom Kippur War.

In honor of his sacrifice, Operation Entebbe was posthumously renamed 'Operation Yonatan,' ensuring that his legacy would be remembered in the annals of Israeli history.
