Jochi

Jochi, born around 1182, was a significant figure in the early Mongol Empire, known for his military prowess and complex familial relationships. As the son of Börte, the first wife of Genghis Khan, his birth was shrouded in controversy due to the circumstances surrounding it. Börte had been captured by the Merkit tribe prior to Jochi's birth, leading to doubts about his parentage. Despite this, Genghis Khan recognized him as his son, although many, including his brother Chagatai, contested this claim, resulting in tensions that would affect Jochi's standing within the family.

After Genghis Khan established the Mongol Empire in 1206, he entrusted Jochi with a formidable force of nine thousand warriors and a vast territory in the western regions of the empire. Jochi's military career was marked by numerous campaigns aimed at expanding Mongol influence, particularly during the invasion of the Khwarazmian Empire from 1219 to 1221. His leadership during these campaigns solidified his reputation as a capable commander.

However, Jochi's relationship with his family remained strained, particularly during the siege of Gurganj in 1221, where conflicts arose between him, his brothers, and Genghis Khan. These unresolved tensions contributed to his estrangement from the family. Jochi passed away around 1225, suffering from ill health, leaving behind a legacy that would continue through his son Batu, who was appointed to govern his territories.
