Alexios III Megas Komnenos, born on the fifth of October in the year one thousand three hundred thirty-eight, ascended to the throne as Emperor of Trebizond in December of one thousand three hundred forty-nine. His reign, which lasted until his death on the twentieth of March in one thousand three hundred ninety, is notable for its extensive documentation and the significant religious grants and literary contributions that characterized his rule.
He was the son of Emperor Basil of Trebizond and his second wife, Irene, a union marked by bigamy. Originally named John, he adopted the name Alexios, possibly in honor of his deceased older brother or his grandfather, Emperor Alexios II of Trebizond. This name change reflects the deep familial ties and the legacy he sought to uphold.
Described by historian George Finlay as possessing an "extremely noble" appearance, Alexios III was noted for his florid complexion, blonde hair, and regular features, including an aquiline nose, which was considered a royal trait by Plato. His physical presence was stout and well-formed, and he was known for his cheerful and generous disposition. However, his reign was not without criticism, as detractors accused him of rashness, violence, and brutal passions.
