Christian VII

Christian VII, born on January twenty-ninth, seventeen forty-nine, was a monarch who ruled as King of Denmark and Norway, as well as Duke of Schleswig and Holstein, from seventeen sixty-six until his death in eighteen oh eight. His reign was marked by significant challenges, primarily due to his struggles with mental illness, which rendered him a nominal king for much of his time on the throne.

Throughout his reign, the dynamics of power shifted frequently, with royal advisers changing in response to various political struggles. Notably, from seventeen seventy to seventeen seventy-two, his court physician, Johann Friedrich Struensee, emerged as the de facto ruler, implementing progressive reforms that were officially sanctioned by the king.

However, Struensee's influence came to an abrupt end in seventeen seventy-two when he was deposed in a coup. Following this event, the governance of the country fell into the hands of Christian's stepmother, Queen Dowager Juliane Marie of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, his half-brother Hereditary Prince Frederick, and the Danish politician Ove Høegh-Guldberg.

From seventeen eighty-four until Christian VII's passing in eighteen oh eight, his son, who would later become Frederick VI, served as the unofficial prince regent, further shaping the future of Denmark and Norway during a tumultuous period.
