Shapur III

Shapur III, a sovereign of Iran, ruled from three hundred eighty-three to three hundred eighty-eight. He was born into a royal lineage as the son of Shapur II, who reigned from three hundred nine to three hundred seventy-nine, and he ascended to the throne following the reign of his uncle, Ardashir II.

His reign was marked by relative tranquility, particularly in the west where a diplomatic resolution was reached regarding the contentious region of Armenia. This agreement effectively partitioned the territory between the Sasanian Empire and the Romans, ensuring that the majority remained under Sasanian control.

However, the eastern front was less favorable, as Shapur III lost the significant mint city of Kabul to the Alchon Huns, a setback that would impact the empire's economic stability.

One of the notable achievements of his reign was the commissioning of a rock relief at Taq-e Bostan, which depicted a scene featuring both him and his father. This artistic endeavor marked him as the penultimate monarch to have such a relief carved, with the last being Khosrow II, who later emulated Shapur III's work.

Tragically, Shapur III's life came to an abrupt end in three hundred eighty-eight when he was crushed by the weight of his own tent, a fatal incident orchestrated by conspiring nobles who had cut its ropes. His legacy continued through his son, Bahram IV, who succeeded him.
